What is Supination?

Supination is when your weight leans more to the outside—lateral side—of your foot when you walk or run.

It’s the opposite of overpronation and is also known as underpronation.

How Can I Tell If I Supinate?

If your supination is severe, it will be easy to tell. Your feet will feel like they tilt outwards when you walk, and it may cause pain on the underside of the feet, as well as causing misalignment of the joins in the leg.

Those who are mild supinators can check the soles of their shoes for wear. If the shoe is more worn on the lateral side, then you’re a supinator.
What Causes Supination?
There are no specific causes of supination other than your foot’s anatomical structure.

Often, people with high arches will supinate as their foot tends to rest on the outer edge for more stability, especially if their shoes have inadequate arch support.

What Can You Do to Prevent Injury from Supination?

Supination can cause injury to both the feet and the other joints in the chain of the leg. Apart from wearing the right shoes, there are a few other ways to minimize the chances of injury caused by supination.

You may consider adding inserts to your shoes if you find that the shoes themselves don’t offer enough support. Inserts can be a cost-effective way to get more support without having to buy a new pair of shoes.

You can also begin to do exercises for strengthening the feet and legs. Gaining strength and muscle in the legs could help to keep them in alignment, reducing the chance of injury.

Stretch your feet and calves well, both before and after exercise. It’s a good idea to perform stretches whenever you have a chance, like if you’re sitting in front of the TV or at your desk.
